What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is an Australia-wide scheme to support people with permanent and significant disability which will replace the current disability support system.

The NDIS will fund long-term high-quality care and support for people with significant disabilities, better link the community and people with disabilities, provide information to people, help break down stereotypes, and ensure quality assurance and best practice among service providers.

The NDIS will give people with disability choice and control over the supports they receive. It will help people with disability support live life their way, achieve their goals and participate in the community. The introduction of the NDIS will significantly increase supports available for people with disability.

When the NDIS is fully operational, an estimated 140,000 people with disability in New South Wales will be able to access supports, including an additional 50,000 people who do not currently receive any disability supports.

Who is the National Disability Insurance Agency?

The National Disability Insurance Agency is an independent agency that has been set up to deliver the NDIS. The NDIA is overseen by the Council of Australian Governments Disability Reform Council. The NDIA website contains information for people with disability, including the NDIS Access Checklist, a tool which helps people to determine if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Who is eligible for the NDIS in NSW?

If the National Disability Insurance Scheme is available in your area, the first step you need to take is to find out if you meet the access requirements, which are available on the national NDIS website.

You are eligible for the NDIS if you:

  • are under 65 when you make your application
  • are an Australian Citizen or resident or permanent visa holder
  • meet the disability or early intervention requirements
  • are aged 65 years and over you will not be eligible for the NDIS. In most cases, you will receive support through the Commonwealth Aged Care System.

Please note: people currently receiving specialist disability supports in NSW who meet the age and disability eligibility requirements for the NDIS will be able to access the NDIS in NSW, regardless of their residential or visa status.
